PORT ORANGE—Anita Burnette has officially filed to run for Volusia County School Board, District 2. The election is set for Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2020. Ida Wright has announced she will not seek reelection for the seat.

“I am very excited to serve the students and teachers of the public schools I attended myself and sent my sons to,” Burnette said. “After everything great educators did for my family, I could not turn down the opportunity to give back when they approached me to run.”

Former School Board Chairman Stan Schmidt is serving as Burnette’s campaign treasurer. “Anita will do what is right for students and teachers. She will make an excellent addition to the board.”

Burnette graduated from Mainland High School in 1987 and attended Campbell Junior High School. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Sciences from the University of Central Florida and a Master’s Degree in Health Sciences-Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. She has worked in public service her entire career of nearly thirty years at Halifax Medical Center. Her two sons graduated from the Law and Government Academy at Atlantic High School.  Burnette is wife of Port Orange Mayor Don Burnette.
