Volusia County Animal Services received a report earlier this week from a concerned citizen regarding the conditions at Wet Nose Big Heart Animal Rescue, a private animal rescue facility on Reed Ellis Road in Osteen, including a dead dog and other live animals suffering from neglect. Executing a search warrant on Tuesday with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, staff with Animal Services, seized 13 dogs, four ducks, a horse, and removed the dead dog from the property.

Investigators found the animals in unsafe and unsanitary conditions, with no access to food, water, or shelter, exhibited signs of neglect, and were suffering from various medical issues.

According to a release, the veterinary team is treating the animals for internal parasites, flea infestation, nutritional deficiency, dental disease, and multiple infections. In addition to the needed medical care, the animals will receive vaccinations, microchips, and sterilization while an ongoing criminal investigation could result in criminal charges against the facility.

“While the criminal investigation is going through the process, our immediate concern is finding good homes for the dogs,” said Volusia County Animal Services Director Adam Leath. “Some are ready for adoption, while others need foster care until permanent arrangements can be made. These animals live in awful conditions and need a stable, loving environment.”

The horse and ducks are now in good homes, but according to Animal Services, the seized dogs still need good homes.

Anyone interested in adopting or fostering one of the dogs should call Volusia County Animal Services at 386-248-1790 and press option 2 or visit Animal Services at 1250 Indian Lake Road in Daytona Beach.

“These animals have been through so much,” said Leath. “They need a warm, safe place to call home."
