The return of the 2022 Daytona Truck Meet was a topic of concern for the Daytona Beach City Commission at their regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, June 16. The Daytona Truck Meet, an annual event at the Daytona International Speedway, is known as the largest truck show in the world.

The event brought in 40-50 thousand people to the Daytona Beach area over the past week.

“Trucks will not be solved tonight,” said Mayor Henry before letting the public speak at the meeting Wednesday evening. “I don’t know if I support the return of this event.”

The event scheduled for June 11-15 started early as participants of the Truck Meet began showing up on Tuesday, June 8. The event promoter rented space over at Daytona International Speedway, which sold out in a matter of hours. However, participants of the event spilled over onto the Daytona Beach beachside area.

Beachside residents were not pleased with traffic delays, a shooting, and other issues caused by the event. There were even reports of a suspected bomb threat at ONE Daytona that ended up with the Truck Meet being moved over to the Volusia Mall.

The City itself had a 16% increase in trash and a bill of $174,000 in police overtime fees.

“I wanted to see what the people of Daytona Beach were experiencing at 2 a.m. and what I saw was unacceptable,” said City Manager Deric Feacher.  A video was put together by one of the audience members showcasing hard-to-watch clips of people fighting, urinating on a public street, and much more.

After a lengthy discussion on the event, Mayor Henry decided not to hold the vote Wednesday night. The deciding vote on the outcome of the return of the 2022 Daytona Truck Meet will take place at a later meeting on an unspecified date.
